In the aftermath of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, I had the pleasure of working with John Curran and his team, who volunteered to develop and deliver an innovative solution – shipping containers configured into a community centre for a village that had been devastated by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake.
Through close collaboration and an understanding of the real needs of the community, facilities were designed to support efforts to bring the community back together, hold regular meetings, and provide a safe space for the children.
It was a project that went noticed by China's top leaders, and inspired other similar projects, but more importantly, is still in use by the community nearly 5 years on since its installation - a testament to the efforts and commitment of John and his team.
